Wasabi

Latin name: Wasabia japonica
Plant Family:  Mustard (Brassicaceae)
Lifespan: Perennial
Origin: Japan
Growing: Wasabi does best in shady, wet environments. We have a spring fed creek running through our property and we plant the wasabi partially submerged in running water. This type of habitat produces the highest quality wasabi although you don't need a creek to grow this plant. It does fine in shady garden spots with lots of water.
Edibility: The leaves, roots and stems are all edible. The stems and roots are grated and used to make the popular condiment in Japanese cooking. I like to add the leaves to my stir fries for a little extra kick.
Medicinal uses: None that is known.
Permaculture Uses: Any plant that produces food in full shade is highly valuable. It also produces a high yield of leaves throughout the year.
Price: $10 per plant
