Roots and Shoots - Columbia Basin

Introduction weekend in the Columbia Basin ( private location will be given after registration). Weekend will cover: wild harvesting ethics, seasonal harvesting rounds, and creating a community for the harvesting year.

What we will harvest and tend: Wild onions, biscuit roots, willow, and sagebrush, plus whatever else we stumble across. We will also tend a wild willow patch for to improve its health and longevity.

What we will process and create: Biscuit root and wild onion stew, and lacto-ferments plus a random weave willow harvesting basket.

Participants can also fish at the lake will camp by, and be prepared for campfire feasting and plant processing.

Meeting up in the canyons outside of Twisp (private locations will be given after registration)

What we will harvest: Black Hawthorn leaf and flower, wild onions, yellow bells, nettle leaf, bare stem biscuit root leaves, balsamroot leaves, willow bark plus fireweed and cattail shoots.

What we will create- Saturday we will eat steamed nettle and cattail shoots with wild onion butter and make dog bane hemp cordage for future projects. Sunday folks will learn how to peal willow bark and possibly find morels (weather permitting)

Deep in the hills of the Methow Watershed, there lies a magical lake …and after class students can fish and swim there this weekend. ( exact and private location will be given after registration)

What we will harvest: Lomatium dissectum, balsam root, pedicularis, Uva ursi , blueberry leaves, bitterbrush, yarrow and mullein leaf. An emphasis on reciprocity will be highlighted as we scatter seeds from the big medicine plants we harvest, creating right relationship and the continuation of these plants and their habitats.

Medicine making will be a big component of this weekend. Participants need to bring their own jars and solvents.

Wild Ferments and Dyes - Methow Valley

This weekend we will wild harvest in the wild canyons by my home and then make some fantastic creations back at the campsite. Afternoon swimming in the Methow River is part of the fun!

What we will harvest: saskatoon berries, fireweed, yarrow, and alfalfa.

What we will create: Service berry pancakes and Ivan Chai from the fireweed we harvest.

Second day we will spin wool and do wild dyes! We will go through the whole mordanting and dyeing process of both animal and plant fibers. Plants we will dye with are bitter brush and sage brush we harvested in previous classes. Students will dye hand spun wool( that they have made) Dogbane hemp cordage( that they have made in previous class) . Students will also get to practice spinning their own fibers with a drop spindle.

We will meet up for an abundant berry harvest at a private berry spot then make an array of wild berry concoctions!

What we will harvest: wild blueberries and huckleberries, blue elderberries, and chokecherries. Possibly king boletes is the weather permits!

What we will make: Wild fermented berry vinegars with guest teacher Gabe Garms. Elderberry syrups with the addition of immune boosting and anti-viral herbs we have harvested in previous classes. Plus traditional pounded chokecherry cakes that we dry as an ingredient for our fall feast in October.

We will also go swimming at my favorite spot nearby. As well as finish up any crafting projects that need completing.

We will start this weekend harvesting in the canyons by my home. Exact private location will be given after registration)
What we will harvest: Cattails and Tule for weaving and rhizomes for flour.
What we will process and create. We will process cattail leaves and tule for weaving, participants need to make sure they have extra space in their car to transport this home. Cattail flour for an ingredient for our fall feast in October. And we will weave a round base cattail, tule and bark basket, using the materials we gathered in previous classes.

Acorns, Lions Mane and Fall Feast -Klickitat

We will end our harvesting year way down in Klickitat at my dear friend Natasha Clarks home, harvesting, feasting and celebrating our harvesting season together.

What we will harvest: Acorns, acorns, acorns. Oak gals, pine pitch and lion’s mane mushrooms.

What we will create and process: Acorn flour, ink and dye from the gals, medicine from lion’s mane mushrooms (weather permitting). We will create a fall feast using the many wild foods we have harvested both as a group and independently over the course of the season.
